Sneakfork has served at Atherton Manor ever since he was a boy. He raised himself up from knives-and-boots boy by his own efforts, and now he is the perfect butler. When confronted with Sneakfork for the first time, County matrons tremble with envy. Some have been known to slip down to his pantry and inquire tactfully if he is happy with his position.
He is.
They go away, crushed.
Well, he was happy with his position.
But he does not like this house party. There is an odd atmosphere about it. And why Lady Atherton would ever have allowed such as Miss Mimsy Gawdhelpus (as he refers to her when out of earshot of the guests) into her house, save as it might be through the servant’s entrance, and then only to be chucked out of it again quick… well, he don’t know what the world’s coming to, and that’s a fact.
