Lady Atherton’s sister-in-law. An explorer.
Georgie is hearty, sporting, and strong-willed. She’s one of those women who people refer to as “quite a good chap” without really thinking about it. She’s such a sport, so very tweedy, that it is impossible to connect her with anything underhanded. She seems like a woman with no secrets.
And until recently, that was true.
Until her husband Bridy Hampstead (Lady Atherton’s brother) died while the two of them were hacking through an African jungle. Snake got him. Poor chap. Georgie was about to report his death- when she happened to remember the terms of Bridy’s will. When he wrote it Georgie had been a wealthy woman, so it made perfect sense to leave most of Bridy’s money to little Ophelia, their only child, and the rest to Lady Atherton. But then had come the crash, and they’d meant to change the thing, but of course they hadn’t gotten around to it.
So Georgie did not report the death. Instead, she came back to England alone, saying that Bridy was still out on safari and that she was just coming back to get over a spot of fever she’d picked up in the jungle. She says she’s going back to join him as soon as she’s quite sure she’s over the worst of it.
And she is going back. To stay.
As soon as she can convert a fair share of Bridy’s assets into cash, she’s going back to Africa.
Of course, Lady Atherton is a suspicious, nasty-minded old party.
